Our Story

Lakshmi Babu is a Kuchipudi dancer, founder, and director of Kuchipudi Dance Academy, Maryland in USA. In 1996, under the guidance of guru Padmashri Dr. Sobha Naidu, she established the Kuchipudi Dance Academy. 

During her early years, she earned a dance diploma from Bhakta Ramdas College of Music and Dance and Natya Visarada from Kuchipudi Art Academy, Hyderabad India. On moving to the USA she taught at India School in Bethesda, MD. In 1996 under the guidance of her guru Padma Shri Dr. Sobha Naidu, she established the Kuchipudi Dance Academy in MD. She also had the opportunity to learn from the legendary Kuchipudi Guru Vempati Ravishankar. She performs along with her two daughters, whose Rangapravesam was conducted in Ravindra Bharati by Guru Sobha Naidu. From Guru Veena Murthy she has learned the Simhanandini dance wherein she paints the picture of the lion with the feet while executing rhythmic footwork.

As the director of Kuchipudi Dance Academy, she is an impactful teacher to many students in the Washington DC metro area. She has conducted 33 solo dance debuts of her students since 2002. In 2018 she received a master’s degree in Kuchipudi Dance from Silicon Andhra University, Milpitas, CA. Honors and accolades include; Governor's Citation by the State of Maryland, Teacher Recognition by McDonalds, Honorary Tulsan by the Governor of Oklahoma, Nava Natya Kala Vibhushani by Sri Viswamji, Teacher Recognition Certificate by National Foundation of Advancements in the Arts.

The Academy is now in its 25th year and has 4 studios across the DC Metropolitan area. Since Covid-19, the Academy has successfully transitioned to virtual learning. Initiatives like ‘Adopt an Artist’, ‘Teaching Series’, ‘Virtual Programming’ have been initiated to provide funding, teaching, and performing opportunities to artists especially during this time.

Lakshmi Babu launched the YouTube Arts banner, Lasyam Creative Media in 2017 with the intent to further promote the Arts.
